Shakespeare’s Avon

This page contains blogs posts of my trips along the Avon River which flows through Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. It is also known as the Shakespeare’s Avon due to its connection to the famous playwright who lived in Stratford-upon-Avon which is one of the main towns that the river flows through. This is to distinguish it from the other Avon rivers in England, such as the one which flows through Bath and Bristol.

Shakespeare’s Avon is the largest tributary of the Severn River and can be paddled from Warwickshire all the way down to its confluence with the Severn River at Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire.

It flows through some stunning scenery including the Vale of Evesham. The Avon River flows through historic towns such as Warwick, Stratford-upon-Avon, Evesham, Pershore and Tewkesbury.

From Stratford Upon Avon to the confluence with the Severn at Tewksbury, the River Avon is a navigation. It is managed by the Avon Navigation Trust (ANT). A license is required on this section, either through Paddle UK or Canoe Wales membership or directly from ANT.
